Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor
For whom ?
The Royal Decree of 5 July 2006 on the appointment and professional competence of safety advisers for the transport of dangerous goods by road, rail or inland waterway (BS of 22 August 2006), imposes the obligation to appoint one or more safety advisers on all undertakings which :
1. those undertakings whose activities include shipping or transporting dangerous goods by road, rail or inland waterway;
2. undertakings which carry out the loading, unloading, filling or packaging activities associated with the transport mentioned in point 1°, including transhipment from road, rail or inland waterway to another mode of transport or vice versa
The function of safety adviser may be carried out by the head of the undertaking, by a person who also performs other duties in the undertaking or by a person who does not belong to the undertaking.
The task of the safety adviser is to ensure by all possible means that the activities related to dangerous goods take place under the legal conditions and under optimal safety conditions.
How does one become a safety adviser?
- One must undergo training at one of the recognised training institutions.
Practical information about the courses can be obtained from the recognised training institutes.
- You have to pass a written exam organised by recognised examiners.
Het certificaat is geldig voor vijf jaar en het wordt telkens voor vijf jaar verlengd indien de houder in het laatste jaar van de geldigheidsduur van zijn certificaat een bijscholing gevolgd heeft en geslaagd is voor een controletest.
The candidate safety adviser has the choice of taking examinations on the following categories of dangerous goods :

class 1
-
class 2
-
class 7
-
all classes except classes 1, 2 and 7
-
only substances with UN numbers 1202, 1203, 1223, 1268, 1863 and 3475
For each category selected, he must pass an examination on the following modules :
- a general part, and
- a specific part of his choice: either road, rail or inland waterway transport
